June 13, 2012 (JournalismDegree.org) -- To recognize the accomplishments of top-tier journalism and communications professors across the country, Journalism Degree.org has developed a list of the Top 50 Journalism Professors in 2012.

Traditionally, major news media channels were the chief transmitters of information about public affairs and pop culture. However, the role of journalism is changing as digital news media becomes more prevalent. We’ve seen a shift towards digital content with the launch of e-readers, smartphones, and other electronic devices. This challenges news organizations to adapt quickly to the changing nature of news coverage. Educators, too, must adapt their programs to train students to enter a digitally-evolving workforce.

We hope the educators featured here inspire future reporters and communicators to explore the field of journalism. The following list introduces 50 admirable professors, in no particular order. The list was created using independent research with the sole purpose of being a resource for our readers.

Midwest

1. Barbara Iverson

Barbara Iverson is an Associate Professor in the Journalism Department at Columbia College. Iverson began teaching interactive multimedia at Columbia in the late 80’s, and she enjoys seeing how technology can enhance communication. Barbara also co-founded the site ChicagoTalks.org, a non-profit, local news source for Chicago and its many neighborhoods.

2. Dr. Mitzi Lewis

Dr. Mitzi Lewis is an Associate Professor in Mass Communication at Midwestern State University. Dr. Lewis instructs classes such as Web Design, The Internet and Society, and Fundamentals of Speech Communication. One of Dr. Lewis’s specialties is public speaking; she has had numerous articles presented at presentations and has been invited to sit on various panels.

3. Dr. Janice Collins

Dr. Janice Collins is an Assistant Professor for the Journalism Department at Eastern Illinois University. Having over 20 years of experience, Dr. Collins is a veteran journalist having won multiple Emmy awards from the top ten markets in writing, producing, editing, video journalism, and reporting. Dr. Collins has held positions ranging from anchor to manager and nine years of experience teaching at the university level.

4. Yong Tang

Yong Tang is an Assistant Professor of Journalism and Mass Media Law in the English and Journalism Department at Western Illinois University. Yong Tang’s major area of research is mass media law and he also conducts research in international journalism and global media studies. Before teaching at the university level, Yong worked for major newspapers in China and Washington D.C.

5. Marty Pieratt

A visiting lecturer at Indiana University, Pieratt’s work has included coverage of the World Series, the Super Bowl, the NCAA Basketball Championship and the Pete Rose baseball betting scandal. He reported extensively on the nation’s worst DUI-related accident and the 9/11 terrorist attacks for both print and broadcast media.

6. Dr. Jim Sernoe

Dr. Jim Sernoe is an Associate Professor and Chair of Mass Communication at Midwestern State University. Dr. Sernoe teaches topics in Mass Communication Law, Mass Communication History, Media Ethics, News Writing, Editing, and Introduction to Mass Communication.

7. David Reed

David Reed is an Associate Professor of Informatics & Computing Science and Director of the Informatics & Computing Science Program at Creighton University. Although David does not have a journalism background, he is the author of CS0 text, A Balanced Introduction to Computer Science, which is currently in its third edition and has been widely used at colleges and high schools.

8. Chris Snider

Chris Snider is an Instructor of Practice in Multimedia for the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Drake University. Chris focuses on innovative and creative ways of telling and presenting stories in print and online. Along with teaching, he also does public speaking for groups or businesses about how the digital world is shaping the future of media.

9. Joseph Weber

Joseph Weber is an Associate Profess for the College of Journalism and Mass Communications at University of Nebraska-Lincoln. For over 35 years, Joseph has worked in magazines and newspapers. Most of that time was spent reporting and writing for Business Week. Weber has also taught at Tsinghua University in Beijing as a visiting professor in the Global Business Journalism program.

Adina Schneeweis is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication and Journalism at Oakland University. She teaches visual journalism and storytelling courses, as well as introductory journalism classes. She is currently developing new courses in international journalism and documentary-making.

12. Chris Daly

Chris Daly is a Professor for the College of Communication at Boston University. Being a seasoned journalist, Chris has experience in wire services, newspapers, magazines, books and online. After graduating from Harvard, he spent 10 years at the Associated Press and also covered New England for the Washington Post. Chris has recently published a book on the history of U.S. journalism, Covering America: A Narrative History of U.S. Journalism.

Brooke Kroeger is the Director of Global and Joint Program Studies for the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute for New York University. Brooke is also the faculty liaison for The Local East Village, which is the collaborative community news and information site of NYU Journalism and the New York Times. Being an international journalist, Brooke has experience overseas, has authored several books and articles, and has done a variety of freelance work.

14. Nina Gilden Seavey

Nina Gilden Seavey is an Associate Research Professor of History, Media and Public Affairs at George Washington University. She is the director of The Documentary Center, which she founded in 1991, and also serves as co-director of the Center for Innovative Media. Nina is an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker and has been making documentaries for over 25 years. Her work can be seen on television, in theaters, and in museum exhibitions across the world.

15. Jack Lule

Dr. Jack Lule is a Professor, Chair of Journalism, and the Director of the Globalization and Social Change Initiative at Lehigh University. Dr. Lule has authored more than 50 scholarly articles and book chapters. He also contributes to numerous newspapers and periodicals, and has served as a commentator about the news on National Public Radio, BBC and other media outlets.

Tara George is an Associate Professor of Journalism at Purchase College, State University of New York. Most of Tara’s journalism experience was done at the New York Daily News. She has also written for The New York Times, Time magazine’s technology supplement, India Abroad, and Poynter Online. Tara also contributed two chapters in a book about Brooklyn.

Sree Sreenivasan is a professor and Dean of Student Affairs at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. Sree teaches in the digital media program, including social media and digital entrepreneurship. Sree is an advocate of using technology to improve education and he has worked on distance-learning and other digital efforts for several years.

18. Jeff Howe

Jeff Howe is an assistant professor who teaches multimedia journalism courses at Northeastern University School of Journalism. Jeff has written for U.S. News & World Report, The Washington Post and Mother Jones. Jeff is also a contributing editor at Wired magazine and happens to be a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University.

19. Christopher Harper

Christopher Harper is a professor and co-director of the Multimedia Urban Reporting Lab for the School of Communications and Theater at Temple University. Chris has a lengthy resume having worked at the Associated Press, Newsweek, ABC News, and ABC 20/20. He also has taught at New York University, Rostov State University in Russia, and Adam Mickiewiez University in Poland.

Professor Helen Benedict is a novelist and journalist specializing in issues of social justice at the Columbia School of Journalism. 24. Joseph J. Marren Jr.

Joseph J. Marren Jr. is the Chair and Associate Professor at Buffalo State College. He teaches newswriting, news editing and new media courses. Born in Buffalo, NY, his newspaper career began with an internship as a sportswriter with the Clarence Bee in 1984 before starting his full-time academic career in 2002.

25. Jeremy Littau

As an assistant professor of journalism and communication at Lehigh University, Jeremy Littau is a former journalist who specializes in teaching and researching digital media. He worked in newsrooms for 10 years as a reporter and editor before his academic career. His students learn how to apply theoretical and conceptual thinking to their media creation.

26. Frankie Edozien

Mr. Edozien was an award-winning New York Post reporter for 15 years before joining New York University as a Clinical Associate Professor in the Journalism Department and as the first Director of the ‘Reporting Africa’ program in 2008. His work focuses on reporting and writing on public health particularly HIV/AIDS as well as current culture.

27. Kay Colley

Kay Colley is an Assistant Professor of Mass Communications and the student Media Faculty Liaison at Texas Wesleyan University. Two of her favorite classes are Feature Writing and Public Relations Campaigns. Dr. Colley is specially trained in convergent journalism and is currently working on a couple of articles on convergent journalism and curriculum.

28. Paul Cuadros

Paul Cuardros is an Assistant Professor for the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at University of North Carolina. Having over 10 years of experience, Paul is an award-winning investigative reporter who focused his career in journalism writing and reporting on issues of race and poverty. Dr. Michael Smith is a Professor of Communication Studies for the College of Arts & Sciences at Campbell University. Dr. Smith is leading the new media trend with his work with online and multimedia using the Web. Having written five books, and numerous articles, Dr. Smith is an award-winning journalist and photographer.

30. Mike Foley

Mike Foley is a Master Lecturer for the Journalism Department at University of Florida. Foley’s classes focus on news reporting and writing. Having over 30 years of experience, Foley has worked on both sides of the newspaper, being both in the field and on the business side of the paper. Foley has also been involved in a wide variety of industry and community service.

31. Jake McNeill

Since joining the KSU Department of Communication in 2005, Dr. McNeill has taught a wide variety of digital media production courses including Photojournalism, Advanced Audio Production, and Multimedia Visions of Community. He also serves on the Department of Communication’s Digital Media Lab Committee.

32. Jacqueline Lambiase

Jacqueline Johnson Lambiase, Associate Professor of Journalism, joined the faculty at the Schieffer School in 2009. She teaches writing, public relations and advocacy, cases in strategic communication, and research courses. Her research focuses on public relations ethics, representations of gender and sexuality in media and marketing, as well as on computer-mediated communication and social media.

Dr. Ginger Carter Miller is a Professor of Mass Communications at Georgia College. Dr. Miller’s expertise and interests are print journalism, newspaper reporting, public relations and special event planning, and media history. She is an explorer of social media and anything to do with mass communications.

38. Bob Stepno

Bob Stepno is an Assistant Professor for the School of Communication at Radford University. Bob teaches journalism, Web production and other media studies topics. Along with teaching, Bob is an advocate of social media, which he hosts his own blend of blogs. Prior to teaching, Bob was a reporter for The Hartford Courant.

39. Edward Wasserman

Edward Wasserman is a Knight Professor of Journalism Ethics for the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications at Washington and Lee University. Edward writes and speaks regarding matters of professional rights and wrongs, technological change, and media ownership and control. His academic expertise includes plagiarism, source confidentiality, and conflict of interest.

40. Peter W. Klein

Peter Klein is the Acting Director and Associate Professor for the Graduate School of Journalism at The University of British Columbia. Klein is an Emmy Award-winning journalist and filmmaker. Being a seasoned journalist, Peter has written for The New York Times, reported for National Public Radio, worked for 60 minutes, and he is currently working on a book about domestic war on terror, with St. Martin’s Press, due out this year.

41. Karen A. Foss

Dr. Foss has been at the University of New Mexico since 1993. She’s served as chair of the Communication and Journalism Department, director of graduate studies for communication and journalism, and director of Women Studies. Currently, she serves as the department’s associate chair.
