Here's what we know so far:

  • An Air India plane crashed Thursday near a major international airport in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad, the airline and the country’s government said.
  • There were 242 people, including 12 crew, on board when the plane crashed into a residential area at just before 5 a.m. ET on Thursday.
  • Air India, the country’s flagship carrier, said in a post on X that Flight 171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick had been “involved in an incident” and that it was “ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest.”
