Dale Allen Pfeiffer -- Speaking Truth To Power
Jan. 21, 2007 -- George W. Bush is going to escalate the War in Iraq. Be prepared for more death, as he said himself. He is stubbornly pursuing this strategy in spite of major opposition from the U.S. public, Congress, the Iraqi people, the Iraqi puppet regime, and the U.S. soldiers on the ground in Iraq.
In total opposition to all reason, Bush is sending 20,000 more troops to Iraq. That sounds like a lot, but it is a drop in the bucket. Right now, there are around 150,000 troops in Iraq. These troops have served extended tours of duty and need to be relieved.
The 20,000 additional troops result in an increase of about 13 percent. Counting only Iraqi males between the ages of 15 and 65, current U.S. troops are outnumbered by 45 to 1. With the additional troops, U.S. forces will be outnumbered 40 to 1.1 George's "surge" amounts to nothing. And most of the additional troops to be deployed will be made up of soldiers who have already served in Iraq and who have not even begun to recover from their previous tour of duty. Veterans of the Iraqi invasion are experiencing their own surge in suicide rates.2
